General description of the collection: The Frederick W. Benteen and Theodore W. Goldin papers include a photocopy of a letter of Frederick W. Benteen to Edward W. Field (February 8, 1886) concerning Benteen and Major Marcus A. Reno at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Typescript copies of 39 letters from Benteen to Theodore W. Goldin (October 20, 1891-August 12, 1896) recounting his varied experiences in the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Indian Wars, especially as they pertained to the Little Big Horn Campaign, to the officers of the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, and to the historiographical controversy surrounding these last two topics. Typescript copy of J.P. Grimes letter to Frederick W. Benteen (January 8, 1896) relating to the Little Big Horn Campaign. Also included are one letter from Sergeant Goldin to Edward A. Brininstool (December 27, 1932) and 5 letters from Goldin to Philip G. Cole (December 31, 1932-February 1, 1933) concerning how he entered into a correspondence with Benteen, what were his own experiences in the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment (1872-1877) and what are his opinions of the literature on Little Big Horn. A letter from R.E. Thompson to Goldin (August 8, 1896) concerning the Battle of Little Big Horn is also included.
